Details for the UACES (University Association for Contemporary European Studies) Scholarships for 2026: UACES was established in March 1, 1968 to promote teaching and research in European studies. We began with a humble meeting of 19 attendees at Chatham House, forming the first UACES committee. We've grown significantly since. Today, over half of our membership is based outside the UK, reflecting an international community of scholars dedicated to the study of Europe. Our objective is to advance education for the public benefit through teaching and research in contemporary European Studies. We are a platform to engage in modern European issues through conferences, publications, and collaborative research initiatives. N All subjects offered by the university Eligible Nationalities: Open to all nationals Scholarship can be taken at: Can be taken in any university except in North America and Europeb Eligible Degrees: PhD Funding Type: Partial Funding, GBP 1,500 Deadline: University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES) Eligible Courses: ✅ What the scholarship offers Four annual scholarships worth £1,500 each to support PhD researchers doing fieldwork in the area of Contemporary European Studies. The award is designed to help cover legitimate fieldwork-expenses such as: international/domestic travel to/from the research site accommodation while on fieldwork visa fees/travel documents research materials, archives, local transport, transcription services, etc. Payment schedule: two parts — about 2/3 up-front (in January) and the final payment once the fieldwork is complete and necessary reporting/receipts submitted. 📋 Eligibility & key conditions Must be a PhD researcher (postgraduate) enrolled in a programme in contemporary European Studies. Research project must be in the subject area of “Contemporary European Studies” (post-WW2, Europe/EU-related context) as defined by UACES. The fieldwork funded by this scholarship must take place between 1 February 2026 and 31 December 2026. Applicant must be a member of UACES (PhD Researcher Member) at time of application. Nationality: Open to international applicants. Additional “reserved” eligibility: one of the four scholarships is reserved for candidates who satisfy at least one of the following: from an ethnic minority or under-represented background within European Studies enrolled at a university in Africa, Asia, Caribbean, Central America or South America studying for PhD in a discipline not traditionally associated with UACES (e.g., anthropology, cultural studies, philosophy) 🗓 Key dates & application process Applications Deadline: 7 November 2025 for 2026 awards. Review period: November 2025. Winners announced: early December 2025. First payment (~£1,000) in January 2026. Fieldwork happens in 2026. After submission of blog post + receipts, final payment (£500) is released. --- 🔍 Application tips & what makes a strong submission Carefully prepare a research proposal within the application form: explain what fieldwork you will do, where, why in-person research is necessary, how it advances your doctoral research, and a timeline. Provide a budget breakdown: itemised expenses, realistic estimates, total not exceeding £1,500. Don’t include unrelated trips or costs outside the funding period. Your supervisor's letter must confirm the fieldwork’s necessity and that you do not already have funding for the same project. The fieldwork timeline should make sense (within Feb-Dec 2026) and be feasible. The review will look at cost-effectiveness, clarity of objectives, relevance, etc. If you fall into the “reserved” category (under-represented background, non-traditional discipline, university in Asia/Africa/LatinAmerica), be sure to indicate this clearly in your application, as one scholarship is reserved for such applicants. Special considerations (especially for applicants from Pakistan / Asia) Since you mentioned you are in Pakistan, these points may be especially relevant: The scholarship is open to applicants worldwide and no nationality restriction, so being based in Pakistan (or more broadly Asia) is fine. Having a university affiliation in Asia fits one of the reserved criteria (university in Asia) — this may strengthen your application. Ensure that your field-site and research agenda clearly relate to “Contemporary European Studies” — i.e., Europe, the EU, European integration, Europe-non-Europe links, etc. If your research is mainly outside Europe and not connected to European Studies, you might need to make the connection explicit. Because the fieldwork must be in 2026, plan realistically travel, visa, documents, accommodation etc in advance, especially if the destination is Europe or another continent. Budget carefully in GBP. Since you’d likely convert expenses from PKR or some other currency, ensure your estimates are clear and realistic. If you use the reserved category criteria, make sure to highlight how you meet it (e.g., if your discipline is non-traditional for European Studies, or your university is in Asia) and how that background enriches your research.
