Its predecessor institution, Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI), was set up in 1981 on the grounds of the former Nanyang University to educate practice-oriented engineers for the burgeoning Singapore economy. In 1991, NTI was reconstituted as Nanyang Technological University, incorporating the National Institute of Education. The alumni rolls of the former Nanyang University were transferred to NTU in 1996. Nanyang University (1955-1980) Old Nanyang University Founded in 1955, Nanyang University was the first and only Chinese university established outside China. Mr Tan Lark Sye first mooted the idea of establishing a Chinese university on 16 January 1953. On 23 March 1953, the Hokkien Huay Kuan donated 523 acres of land for the university, and Mr Tan himself donated S$5 million. His call to establish a Chinese university received enthusiastic support from communities all over Southeast Asia. In 1955, a pre-university class was started to prepare students for entry into the new university. The first batch of 584 students was admitted on 15 March 1956. There were three faculties: arts, science and commerce. Research activities were started as early as 1957. The first batch of 437 graduates was produced in 1959. Seven years later, in 1963, the student enrolment reached 2,324. In 1980, Nanyang University was legislated to merge with the University of Singapore. In 1981, Nanyang Technological Institute was set up on the premises of the former Nanyang University. NTU became autonomous in 2006 and is today one of the two largest public universities in Singapore. Sciences: Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics. Business: Accountancy and Business (Nanyang Business School). Humanities & Arts: Economics, Psychology, Public Policy, Sociology, and Digital Animation. Medicine: Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Note: Some scholarships cover only the first few years of the program).

Note: Most NTU scholarships (like the Nanyang Scholarship) carry no bond, meaning you are not required to work for a specific sponsor after graduation, provided you fulfill the standard MOE Tuition Grant requirements. 

Eligible Nationalities: NTU offers a tiered scholarship system based on nationality and merit. Singapore Citizens & PRs: Eligible for the Nanyang Scholarship, NTU Talent Scholarship, and various school-specific awards. ASEAN Nations: The ASEAN Undergraduate Scholarship is specifically for citizens of ASEAN member countries (excluding Singapore). International Students: The Nanyang Global Scholarship and NTU President Award are open to all nationalities based on global competition. Eligibility Criteria Academic Excellence: Applicants must possess outstanding results in GCE 'A' Levels, IB Diploma, NUS High School Diploma, or equivalent Year 12 qualifications. Leadership & CCA: A strong record of co-curricular activities and demonstrated leadership potential. GPA Maintenance: Scholars must typically maintain a minimum CGPA of 3.5 out of 5.0 to renew the award each semester. Application Procedure The application for scholarships is integrated with the admission process. Follow these steps to ensure a successful submission: 

Admission : You must first submit an online application for admission to an NTU undergraduate degree program. Access the Form: Once admitted or during the application window, use your application number to log into the Scholarship Application Portal. Personal Essay: Prepare a compelling personal statement (usually 250–300 words) highlighting your achievements and aspirations. After submitting the form, you will receive a URL to send to your teacher/referee for an online appraisal.
